About

EcoStreets.net is part of a larger network of blogs on Streetsblog.net, covering issues of sustainability and livable streets. Our focus is on the community of students, faculty and staff at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. We combine the practice and ethos of journalism with the tools of social media to build better online communities which will hopefully influence real life communities.

meinarlesI am a master’s student at the University of Nevada, Reno in Interactive and Environmental Journalism.

Coming from the City of Sin (Las Vegas), my anxieties with car driving run deep. The less I use my car, the more I realize how much of a burden it truly is on my personal psychology and the environment. I enjoy buses and subways. I collect metro maps. It’s kind of an obsession. That’s why I yearn for a bus and light rail system in my hometown. It would make the city so much more wonderful.

But this blog is not an out and out love affair with Nevada’s Regional Transportation Commission. Hopefully, it’s an engaged and intelligent debate about what’s best environmentally and socially for Las Vegas and its residents.

I believe that using technology can only enhance the stories we choose to tell, whether it be personal or journalistic. It creates a smaller, more interconnected world. Only then can we see the lives and struggles of others thousands of miles away as our own.

Liz was a my partner in crime for this project but she has moved on to other projects. You can still read her stuff by clicking on the “biking” or “Boston” tags.

I lived in downtown Boston for the last five years, commuting via bike for many of those years. I quickly learned how to dodge vehicles, bike down (fast moving) one-way streets and properly lock my bike. It was a great experience, and one that made me realize cities can and should be more eco-friendly for urban transportation. Less cars, more bike lines, more efficient bus systems. Ultimately, more options to save some cash and save the planet.
