BU Bikes Blog prides itself to be a “holistic and inclusive student and faculty organization,” focusing on improving cycling experiences for the greater Boston University community. It’s creator, Sonya Savchenko, is a student at BU and is working hard to help transform Boston into a more biker-friendly environment. Nicole Freedman – Boston’s Bike Czar

Boston’s Mayor Thomas Menino appointed Freedman as Boston’s official Bike Director in 2007 to reinvent Boston’s biking infrastructure and turn Boston into a world-class biking city. After getting handed the position with a green light to achieve above the bar, Freedman has implemented Boston’s first comprehensive bike map for residents and users to rate routes around the city as “beginner,” “intermediate,” or “advanced.” cityofboston.gov/bikes She’s planned miles of bike lanes for the coming future with 250 additional bike rakes scheduled for installation around the city.

“I was ecstatic,” says Freedman recalling the mayor’s offer. “Boston has the potential to be a world class cycling city. It’s compact, flat and has a strong cycling subculture. We have the raw materials for a very successful program.

The Massachusetts bicycling coalition is a non-profit organization committed to making biking a safer, more enjoyable experience in three chapters located on the Massachusetts coast, including the Metro Boston area. This year, the Bicyclist Safety Bill law was passed after 8 long years of debate. MassBike played an integral role through the bill’s history, from drafting to language to its final signing. With currently 3,000 members, Massbike is the largest advocacy group in the Boston area, pushing for the sports progression.
