Glossary
This is a glossary of terms on Las Vegas transportation.
ACE Bus: The ACE bus is the Regional Transportation of Southern Nevada’s effort to create a Bus Rapid Transit line in Las Vegas. Currently, the RTC runs the Max Line which is the pilot program of ACE and BRT.
Bus Rapid Transit : Design of a public transit system that pairs features of a light rail with that of a standard bus system. Buses typically ride in a dedicated lane and get priority at stop lights. Many cities opt for BRT because they feel it is more flexible than a light rail in that you can alter a route. Critics say that in the long run, BRT is actually more expensive and that investment in light rail shows more commitment to true sustainable transportation goals.
Livable Streets: A term coined by author Donald Appleyard in his eponymous book, livable streets advocates better urban planning to redesign streets to incorporate a more multimodal approach to traffic – pedestrian traffic, bicycle traffic, bus traffic, train traffic, etc. It is Appleyard’s view that current streets give too much prominence to cars.
Midtown UNLV : A project started by former university president Carol Harter and business developer and CEO of Vista Group, Michael Saltman. Midtown UNLV was intended to create a more integrated and multimodal space around UNLV and the Maryland Parkway corridor. Some finished projects include the redesign of the Moyer Student Union and building of the Greenspun Hall which houses the College of Urban Affairs.
Mobility: A term in urban planning that refers to the ability to get around by different modes of traffic – pedestrian, bicycle, bus, train, and car.
